Radio Janakpur

                           

After spending a bit over a week in Kathmandu we finally began our journey to the east, to a small town called Ilam. The town is on the map for one thing and one thing only... Tea!! It is about a 20 hour bus journey from Kathmandu so we decided to break the trip up into two parts, we would first stop the city of Janakpur and then continue on to Ilam a couple of days later.

Después de pasar un poco mas de una semana en Katmandu emprendimos finalmente nuestro viaje en dirección al este, hacia un pueblo llamado Ilam. El pueblo esta en el mapa por una única cosa ... Te!! Es un viaje de unas veinte horas en bus desde Katmandu así que decidimos hacer la ruta en dos partes, pararíamos primero en la ciudad de Janakpur para luego seguir a Ilam un par de días después. 

Janakpur is a very interesting city entwined with mysticism. It is a city of huge importance to those of the Hindu religion as it is the mythical location where Sita, wife of Rama, was born and where they were married so it remains a very important site of pilgrimage.

Janakpur es una ciudad muy interesante entrelazada con misticismo. Es una ciudad de gran importancia para los Hinduistas ya que fue según la mitología el lugar donde Sita, esposa de Rama, nació e igualmente donde se casaron así que es un lugar de peregrinaje muy importante.

The main attraction for visitors to Janakpur is the Janaki Mandir Palace which has absolutely beautiful architecture that somehow resembles a giant birthday cake. Layers and details adorn all sides to offer an exquisite spectacle. Some of the surrounding temples and buildings are painted in pink and orange tones and with the setting sun it seems like an edible landscape in the middle of the dust. Somehow, this town wears sunrises and sunsets like magical outfits.

La atracción principal para quienes visitan Janakpur es el palacio Janaki Mandir que tiene una arquitectura absolutamente bella que de alguna manera parece un pastel de cumpleaños gigante. Capas y detalles adornan todos sus lados ofreciendo un espectáculo exquisito. Algunos de los templos a sus alrededores están pintados en tonos rosas y naranjas que con el sol poniente forman un paisaje comestible en medio del polvo. De alguna manera, esta ciudad se viste de amaneceres y atardeceres como si fuesen mágicos vestidos.

We were visiting at a very special time of the year as December is the anniversary of the marriage of Rama and Sita, this meant we had the pleasure of seeing two living gods that represent these two important figures. If you are not acquainted with the concept of living goddesses it is well worth reading the short article linked above.

Estábamos visitando en una epoca del año bastante especial ya que en diciembre se celebra el casamiento de Rama y Sita, así que tuvimos el placer de ver dos dioses vivientes que encarnan estas dos figuras. Si no están familiarizados con el concepto de dioses vivientes vale la pena leer el pequeño articulo que enlazamos aquí arriba. 

On top of some of the roofs and small domes located strategically around the city, old loudspeakers diffuse religious chants with a rusty sound from early in the morning until late in the evening. We named it Radio Janakpur.

En el techo de algunos de los pequeños domos situados estratégicamente en la ciudad, viejos altoparlantes difunden cantos religiosos con un sonido oxidado desde temprano en la mañana hasta tarde en la noche. Lo llamamos Radio Janakpur.

We spent only one full day in Janakpur because of out eagerness to climb the mountains again and be immersed in tea fields, but it is well worth a visit.

Estuvimos tan solo un día entero en Janakpur por nuestra impaciencia de subir las montañas de nuevo y encontrarnos inmersos en los campos de te; a pesar de nuestra prisa es una ciudad que vale la pena ver.
