Caminante en Patan / Wanderer in Patan
Llegamos
We arrived to Patan, an ancient Malla city-state located to the south, and that now forms part of Kathmandu along with Bahktapur, separated by the Bagmati River. This place is also called by its Sanskrit name « Lalitpur » (meaning « City of Beauty ») or "Yala" in Newari language and is said to be the keeper of the « finest collection of temples and palaces in the whole Nepal ». Nearby the peripherical ring, Ekantakuna district is home of a cosy guest house full of long-stay travelers, artists and researchers of all types. To get here we had no more direction than the name of the district and some descriptive indications that pointed to the « Big Tree nearby the Swiss Embassy ». For a city as big as Kathmandu, it is quite unbelievable that people can find their way on such aleatory adresses. But there was the Big Tree, and there was « 9Rooms ».

agua o simplemente viene a bañarse.
It's true that beyond the dusty roads, a certain magic of another time seems to remain. Hinduist and Buddhist temples and well as shrines bloom on the corners, on patios, between trees and in the alley ways. In its Durbar Square, magnificent constructions elevate, and within which curious water channels of stone are used as fountains by its inhabitants. In these spaces that are found nearby the temples, people wash their clothes, gather water or simply come to bathe. The water that pours out from the mouths of engraved hybrid creatures (something between dragons and elephants), has an almost ritual connotation. And even though today the water is not pure and fresh as it once was, but it is used with a respectful posture nontheless.

Around Durbar Square, streets open where you can easily find fascinating images of woodcarving that still decorate the habitations that seem abandoned or forgotten in other time. The temples, as well as the houses, are framed by a thousands of figures and patterns that seem to resist the passing of time. The vivid colors (mainly magenta, orange and red) that decorate every corner, are mixed with rice grains and flower petals that survive the daily transit of the dust and trash. It seems like although there is chaos everywhere there will always be a offering space, a place for beauty. Beauty of another time that still lives today, in another way. The Golden Temple that is to the north of Durbar Square (also built in the twelfth century), is equally a place that illustrates this encounter between esthetics, religion, textures and symbols. In the same way, the figures, features and nepali faces are dressed with colors, tikas, details and textures. In the middle of the dust the hybrid vision of a city between diverse times is born.

The sides of the main roads turn temporarily into parking spaces for vendors of fruits and vegetables that come from the fields of the valley of Kathmandu. The women carry enormous baskets or push karts full of mustard leaves, tomatoes and other delicious things. At the same time the man stand beside their bicycle-shops, with their scales hanging in the front, and other equipment, and with a basket at the back they transport kilos of dusty fruit.

segundos, parcial y rapidamente.
At night there are no lights illuminating the uneven streets of the city. Some privileged places are lit from the inside, and give clues through the dust in order to decipher the urban topography, but without these lights the place is submerged in darkness. The cars and motorbikes that travel in a chaotic manner emit illuminating echoes, giving the chiaroscuro effect, shadows, silhouette games, and the eyes that are trying to find the way, guessing the faces, spaces, and lines. The streets of the city form mazes, in which flourishing tangles of electric cables resemble bee colonies, remains of trash covering the floor, unevenesses and incoherences are found on the paths, which requires a certain ability to keep the attention focused on every frame. During the night, these strategies of the wanderer require that they read between what the lights allow them to see only for some seconds, partially and rapidly.
Kathmandu seems to be like that; a place where the readings are always partial, where such different elements are tangled that the non-native-eye can only perceive them for a fleeting second. Kathmandu, this fractal-place where the prayers come together to the rhythm of the klaxons, seems to open in multiple dimensions.
