Swayambhunath

Swayambhunath is one of the three most important buddhist stupas in Nepal, located on the top of a hill situated in west of the city (after climbing over 400 steps). Swayabhunath boasts one of the most spectacular views of the capital of Nepal.

Swayambhunath es una de las tres mas importantes estupas Budistas en Nepal, situada en la cima de una colina al oeste de la ciudad (que lleva a escalar unas 400 escaleras). Swayambhunath ofrece una de las mas espectaculares vistas de la capital de Nepal.

The eyes in the stupa represent the 'Eyes of Buddha', these are not only found on the large stupas but also in the small stupas in the backstreets of the city. Around every stupa there are lines of Tibetan prayer flags and prayer wheels that spin as they are brushed by the hands of the visitors as they circumambulate clockwise.

Los ojos en la estupa representan los "Ojos de Buda", que no solo se encuentran en las grandes estupas si no también en las pequeñas que yacen en las callejuelas de la ciudad. Al rededor de cada estupa hay lineas de rezos Tibetanos y ruedas de rezos que dan vueltas por el roce de las manos de los visitantes mientras circunvalan en el sentido de las manecillas del reloj.

People visiting the stupa for religious reasons will always walk to the left and it can be seen as disrespectful to walk in an anti-clockwise direction.

Las personas que visitan de manera religiosa las estupas siempre caminaran hacia la izquierda y puede ver como irrespetuoso cambiar este sentido.

It is known in the tourists circles as the 'Monkey Temple' since it is home to hundreds of monkeys considered as sacred animals. Their presence is also known by the tourists to be threatening to their food rations.

En los círculos de turistas se conoce también como el "Templo de los Monos" ya que es hogar de cientos de monos que son considerados animales sagrados. Su presencia también es conocida por los turistas como una amenaza a sus "raciones" de comida.

Our visit to this sacred spot was accompanied by a beautiful sunset, which made the golden structures shine.

Nuestra visita a este lugar sagrado fue acompañada de un hermoso atardecer, que hacia brillar las estructuras doradas.

Swayambhunath is an important place of contemplation and meditation for Buddists and one could imagine that its location makes it the perfect place for silence and reflection. Instead, it seems that is has been adapted for a tourist public in search of a glimpse of the roots of Buddhist tradition in Nepal. In this tiny "town" we found beautiful abandoned old houses next to shops and vendors that display the latest souvenirs inspired by a tranquility that the monkeys fighting, (our) cameras clicking, tourists yelling, and they themselves contribute to fade away. Yet the visitors take advantage of the relative solitude that the landscape permits in order to complete a short experience of peace and contemplation

Swayambhunath es un importante lugar de contemplación y meditación para los Budistas, y se pudiera imaginar que su ubicación hace de éste un espacio propicio para el silencio y la reflexión. En cambio, pareciera mas que se ha adaptado a un publico turista en búsqueda de una mirada hacia las raíces de la tradición budista en Nepal. En este pequeño "pueblo" encontramos hermosas casas antiguas abandonadas al lado de puestos de venta que disponen de la ultima creación de souvenirs inspirados en una tranquilidad que los monos peleando, (nuestras) cámaras disparando, turistas gritando, y ellos mismos parecen haber contribuido a desvanecer. Aun así, los visitantes aprovechan de la relativa soledad que permite mirar el paisaje para completar una visita a la paz y contemplación.
