Lumbini

Lumbini is the place where Siddartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha, was born. This history gives the place an image of peace, serene tranquility and slow movements. We had an experience quite on the contrary, as nowhere else had we seen a live street concert with young Nepali people dancing and singing their way to a prize, and a thief being held down and clobbered on the head with a pole in just a short 3 night visit.

Lumbini es el lugar donde nació Siddhartha Gautama, también conocido como el Buddha. La historia da al lugar un imagen de paz, tranquilidad serena y movimientos despacitos. Tuvimos una experiencia bastante contraria; en ningun otro lugar habiamos visto un concierto en vivo en la calle con jovenes de Nepal bailando y cantando para ganar un premio, y la siguiente noche el gerente del hotel que atrapo un ladron entrandose y le pegó en la cabeza con un palo, y todo eso en una visita de solo 3 noches.

This image of peace and purity that comes with the name Lumbini gets beaten by reality in almost every arm wrestle. The sky in Lumbini is steadily a hazy brown and makes it almost impossible to tell whether there are clouds in the sky or not at any given moment. The town of Lumbini is made up of just one road leading south from the main highway, across the highway is the only real attraction that Lumbini has to offer, the Lumbini Development Zone. The one street of Lumbini starts of as just hotels and average restaurants, but after about a kilometer it turns into another world all together. Small traditional houses painted with tints of brown and orange line the street and at sunset all the candles start to flicker from within. There are small parks scattered in alley-ways leading off this main street and volleyball seems to be the sport of choice. All the children seem very inclusive to strangers so don't miss out on a game if you visit.

Esta imagen de paz y pureza que viene con el nombre Lumbini se enfrenta con una realidad diferente en casi todos los casos. El cielo de Lumbini es consistentemente un halo cafe brumoso y hace casi imposible saber si hay o no hay nubes en cualquier momento. El pueblo de Lumbini consiste de solamente una calle que va hacia al sur desde la carretera principal, al otro lado de esta carretera esta la principal atraccion que tiene Lumbini para ofrecer: La Zona de Dessarollo de Lumbini. La (unica) calle de la ciudad empieza con nada mas que hoteles y restaurantes sospechosos, pero despues de un kilometro mas o menos se vuelve otro mundo totalmente. Casitas tradicionales alineadas en la calle, pintadas con tintas de cafe y naranja, y en el atardecer todas las velas empiezan a iluminar los adentros. Hay pequeños parques escondidos detras de esta calle y el volleyball parece el deporte favorito. Tod@s l@s niñ@s parecen muy inclusiv@s con los extrajeros asi que vayan por un partido si visitan el lugar.

The central canal is the most prominent feature of the Lumbini Development Zone, and looking from one end to another gives the visitor an almost post-apocalyptic sensation. The hot and humid tropical weather of the lowlands of Nepal mean that there is a constant air of mold and deterioration.

El canal central es el rasgo mas prominente de La Zona de Desarrollo de Lumbini, y ver desde un extremo a otro le da el visitante una sensation casi post-apocoliptica. El caliente y humedo clima tropical de las tierras bajas de Nepal hace que siempre haya un aire de moho y deterioración.

Nestled at the eastern end of this Development Zone stands the fortress-style structure famous for housing the exact spot where Siddhartha was born and named the Maya Devi Temple. The exact spot is marked by a stone, covered in glass, with an armed guard, a pile of money, and a line of people at least 500 meters long. The guard standing next to the stone hurries everyone along so even getting a glimpse of the sacred spot is a very rushed and unrelaxed experience. There are strictly no cameras allowed in, and the guards will not hesitate to yell across the room to inform people of this. Next to the fort is the sacred pond, the place where Siddhartha took his first bath, now greenish and inhabited only by little posing turtles.

Anidado al este de esta Zona de Desarrollo se encuentra la estructura semblante a una fortaleza famosa por ser el punto exacto de nacimiento de Siddhartha y llamada Templo de Maya Devi. El punto exacto esta marcado por una piedra, cubierta por un vidrio anti-balas, con un guarda armado, un montón de dinero de ofrendas, y una fila de personas  de por lo menos 500 metros. El guarda al lado de la piedra apresura a la gente así que nada mas que verla es una experiencia completamente apresurada. No hay cámaras permitidas adentro y los guardas no dudan en gritar al otro lado del templo para informar a la gente de esto. Justo afuera de la fortaleza hay un estanque sagrado donde se bañó Siddhartha por primera vez, ahora verdoso y habitado por pequeñas tortugas a las que les encanta posar. 

Although this description may paint a rather disappointing picture of Lumbini, and especially of the Lumbini Development Zone, there is one thing that almost makes up for all the others, cycling! The zone houses many monasteries representing buddhist communities from all around the world and they are all free to enter and explore. They are spaced so far apart that a bicycle is the only way to see them all in a short time and with roads winding throughout the whole zone and with a rental price of 1$ a day it is a cyclers paradise. Along with the mold and deterioration, the development zone has a strong feeling of freedom, and one can cycle anywhere and enter any monastery whatsoever from 5am until 9pm.

Aunque esta descripción de pronto pinta una pintura bastante decepcionada de Lumbini, y especialmente de La Zona de Desarrollo de Lumbini, hay una cosa que arregla todas las otras, la bici!! La zona es hogar de muchos monasterios que representan comunidades budistas de todo el mundo y todas son gratis para entrar y explorar. Están espaciados de tan larga distancia que en bici es la única manera verlos todos (o muchos) en un tiempo corto, y con callecitas serpenteantes por toda la zona y con un precio de $1 dólar al día, es el paraíso para ciclistas. También con el aire mojoso, hay un gran aire de libertad, y se puede montar bicicleta en cualquier lugar y entrar cualquier monasterio de 5am a 9 pm.

(The diversity of offerings we had seen in Nepal grew a little more as we passed through lumbini, with a lock of hair being added to the list / La diversidad de ofrendas que habiamos visto en Nepal crecio un poquito mas mientras pasamos por Lumbini, con un nudo de cabello añadado a la lista)

At sunset we entered the Korean monastery and witnessed an incredibly beautiful display of worship (sound). Afterwards we were forced to ride back to the entrance gate with just the moon as our light and at one point we were stalked and may have been close to being attacked by a giant monkey. Surprisingly after a whole day of cycling through the park and entering various building we came across just 2 guards, who were busy fighting a snake at the time. It should not be mentioned, wildlife is another attraction of the Development Zone.

En el atardecer entramos al monasterio Coreano y fuimos testigos de una muestra de admiración increíblemente bella. Después tuvimos que hacer bici hacia la entrada principal con la luna como nuestra luz y nada mas, y en un momento fuimos seguidos por sigilo y tal vez estuvimos cerca de ser atacados por un mono gigante. Sorprendentemente, después un día completo haciendo bici en la zona y entrando a varios monasterios, vimos solamente 2 guardas, que estuvieron muy ocupados peleando con un serpiente cuando les pasamos. Se debe mencionar, la vida salvaje es otra atracción del parque.
