Ilam: the Green velvet / Ilam: el terciopelo Verde

Ilam es un pequeño pueblo situado en la cima de una franja montañosa cubierta por campos de té. La principal atraccion del lugar son sus vistas esmeraldas y la oportunidad de probar deliciosos tés. Ilam es el primo nepali de Darjeeling, que se encuentra del otro lado de la frontera, en India. También es el punto de entrada para viajeros que vienen de Sikim e India hacia Nepal. 

Ilam is a small town situated at the top of a mountain range covered by tea fields. The main attraction of this place are its emerald views and the occasion to try delicious tea. Ilam is the Nepali cousin of Darjeeling, located at the other side of the frontier, in India. It is also the entrance point for travelers coming from Sikim and India towards Nepal.

Desde Janakpur es un viaje largo, primero en la planicie del Terai hacia Birtamode (antes de la frontera con India) y luego tres horas en jeep montaña arriba. En el camino, encontramos vestigios de la colaboracion entre la Union Sovietica y Nepal, rios secos ahora llenos de arena, y una mezcla entre jungla, palmeras y arboles de otros lugares. Y del calor, se sube al frio y a la neblina que cubre a Ilam. 

From Janakpur it is a long journey, first midst the plains of the Terain towards Birtamode (before the border with India) and then counting three hours in jeep inside the mountains. In our journey, we found old remains of the collaboration between the Soviet Union and Nepal, dry rivers now filled with sand, and a mixture between the jungle, palm trees and trees coming from other places. And from the heath you climb to the cold and mist that covers Ilam.

Se dice también de Ilam que es el primer pueblo ecologico de Nepal, en el que se fomenta la consciencia hacia la preservacion del medio ambiente por la parte de la poblacion. Aunque a primera vista se nota un cambio con las demas ciudades que hemos visitado, terminamos por ver los mismos rastros del pasaje humano en los paisajes y ciudades. 

It is said as well that Ilam is the first ecological town of Nepal, where the populations's consciousness towards the preservation of the eco-system is fomented. Even though you can see at first sight some difference with the other cities we've visited, we ended up witnessing the same footprints of the human tracks amongst the landscapes and cities.

Ademas del té, la region de Ilam es un lugar estrategico porque fronterizo. Muy cerca de Birtamode -en el distrito Jhapa- se encuentran campos de refugiados butaneses, que han sido parte de la crisis de refugiados mas larga y olvidada desde las migraciones politicas de los años 1990. Asi que a parte del té y los sueños del turista, hay un tramaje politico complejo en la region.

Besides the tea, the region of Ilam is a strategic place because it's the borderline. Very close to Birtamode -in the Jhapa district- you can find the buthanese refugee camps that have been part of the longest and most forgotten political migrations from the 1990s. So behind the tea and our tourist dreams, there is a complex political weaving in the region.
